howto install software

October 15th, 2006 at 18:12

Todays topic is installing software on a mac.

Step 1:
Download your desired software.

The most common formats are *.dmg files or other kinds of archives. In the second case use one of the archivers mentioned in this howto to extract the files. DMG Files can be easily mounted with a double-click on it. A new drive will appear in your finder including the installation files.

Step 2:
Your installation file(s) should now be in on of the following formats:

  • yourApplication.app
  • yourApplication.(m)pkg

App-Files are simple archives which can be easily dragged into your Applications folder. Thats the only thing you have to do. Please keep in mind that you have to be administrator, otherwise OS X will force you to auth yourself as admin.

Pkg-files are interactive installation routines, like most users know form windows. Double-click them and navigate through the install routine.

Finally your software is installed and you can start it by clicking its name in your Application folder.
